LISSUMMON
Lios Iomána Feabra
[February]
Volume
1, Issue 60 7th
February 2008
Hail Glorious St Patrick we
will sing on La Fheile Phadraig (St Patrick's Day). Some, not all will
wear the bunch of shamrock. The Irish will parade in towns and cities the
world over. Every village in Ireland worth its salt will walk in procession of
some sort or other and of course all parades will have the obligatory lad
dressed up in the vestments and mitre hat of the mythical image of Patrick
(Wonder did he ever wear that garb in his life). And of course, buckets
and barrels of Guinness will be downed in honour of our national saint.
But do we Irish know or care
anything about this great man and what he stood for? I don't think we take him serious
enough. How many have read his 'Confessions'? These are works written by his
own hand. How many of us ask him for a spiritual ' leg up'? You know, the way
we call to numerous other 'foreign saints to intercede for us when things
get tough. No we rarely speak to the man.
A couple of years ago R.T.E
carried out a survey to find out who was the ten most favoured saints in
Ireland. Now we know that vast numbers of Irish couldn't care less about
the saints these days. But amongst those who do, who do you think topped
the poll. "Ouch sure Patrick must have walked it, easy" I hear
you say. No, you're wrong. "Well then he must have come a close
second". Nope not second, third or fourth. In fact,
he didn't even figure in the poll at all. It was the French and
Italians that led the way. Anybody but our own. You
see, I happen to like the fellow. He got things tough. He was kidnapped at an
early age, made a slave to those horrible Irish, had a few scary brushes with
Satan. He was a humble guy, didn't mind telling you his faults or that he
didn't have a great education and felt inferior to those yuppie academics. But
above all he took on the powers that be. I love humble mortals who do
that. So I for one will give the man a bit of homage on the 17th.
It was us 'Taigs who
canonised the guy but we better look after him' cause other denominations are
showing him some great respect and honour of high quality. So peel away the myths about our Saint and
get down to the real man and I think you'll like him too.
Happy
La Fheile Phadraig.

The January quiz on 25th
was a good nights craic. As expected, numbers were a little less than the
bumper December Quiz. However we still managed to raise in excess of £130 for
our charities. Francis Savage rounded off the evening with a few Kenny Rogers
songs complete with a few lines of his own thrown in for good measure. Thanks
to all those who attended. The next quiz will be on the very last day of
February (29th) and we look forward to seeing you all. Presentation
of the ladies championship runner up medals will also take place on this night
after the quiz.
G.F.C.
AGM
Our annual GFC AGM took
place on 7th Jan with a large crown in attendance. Despite seeing
such a great turn out, it was disappointing to see only 1 new member, Martin
Rice, being elected to the Committee. Excellent reports were once again
prepared by our officers at all levels. The treasurers report again highlighted
the need to be vigilant on the purse strings. Our club depends on the giving of
funds and most importantly your time on a voluntary basis. Without this, we
definitely could not survive. From the
AGM it was interesting to note that we have lost some ground on our fund
raising LOTTO draw. We are all constantly being hounded for that extra few
quid, but see if you can spare a little cash and help to resurrect our main
fund raising event.
Ladies Football
All those interested in
playing ladies football at any age level this season are asked to attend a
meeting in the clubrooms on Sunday 10th Feb at 1.00pm.
All new and returning players especially welcome to join in the craic and
improve your fitness.

The youth and football club
are jointly taking part in this years St Patrick’s Day parade again this
year. The theme this year is 'Celebrating Children and Young People'. We
hope to involve the children in the preparations as much as
possible so if you would like your child to be in the parade, be
involved in making of their own costumes etc or you would like to
help out, come to the youth club on Monday night. The earlier we make
preparations the better so any ideas or suggestions are welcome. We are
unsure if we will have a float this year, as our usual driver may not be able
to do it, if you can help out with a lorry and trailer, please get in
contact.
